In our neck of the woods, Mother Nature was kind enough to grant us a perfect Charlie Brown Halloween, with mild temperatures, crunchy leaves, clear skies, and plenty of grinning, glowing pumpkins. But she must have been waiting impatiently in the wings, because overnight she unleashed her November powers. What guise does she take on this time of year? Is she a cackling witch? A Halloween hangover that enjoys wreaking havoc with our commutes? Or is she a pristine ice queen, who takes a haughty pride in the crystalline curtains she drapes across the landscape?
Whichever she might be, I don’t want to stand around outside long enough to find out. This is my time to load up with sweaters, blankets, socks, baked goods, and hot chocolate as the circus of winter weather plays outside.
Which brings me to one of my Lists. On a recent pre-Halloween grocery list, I noticed distinct changes from my typical summer lists. Here’s how some of it read:
flour
sugar
vegetable oil
canned pumpkin (2)
pumpkin-pie spice
hot chocolate
pumpkin (whole)
kleenex
Aside from the Kleenex (I do blow my nose year-round), I usually don’t find myself buying those things in the middle of July. So I’m curious: what do your November grocery lists look like? (And by the way, is it acceptable to make hot chocolate just to spray it with whipped cream and then eat it off the top, like the liquid is just some sort of whipped-cream delivery device? Just asking. My friend wants to know.)

Lately I've just wanted junk food and comfort food -- it's probably the cold weather. :)
ReplyDeleteHot cocoa and pudding are both just vehicles for whipped cream. And both should be on a winter grocery list. Around this time of year my lists start including things like canned sweet potatoes and french fried onions for those oh-so-healthy Thanksgiving vegetable side dishes.
